How to Effectively Identify & Control Electrostatic Sparks During Your Dust Hazards Analysis

If you are operating a facility that handles or processes combustible powders or dusty materials, then you are obliged by NFPA 652 to perform a Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA). DHA provides a means of identifying and evaluating the powder/dust fire, flash fire, and explosion hazards on your facility. One very credible but not well understood ignition source in facilities working with combustible powders is electrostatic discharges. Ignition of explosible dust clouds can occur when the energy of the electrostatic discharge (spark) exceeds the minimum ignition energy (MIE) of the dust cloud.

Electrostatic discharges (commonly referred to as sparks) result from the generation and accumulation of electrostatic charges. Electrostatic charge generation most frequently occurs when any two materials come into contact with each other and then separate. This webinar discusses the different ways electrostatic ignition hazards could arise in industry and the practical measures that can be considered to prevent/control them based on the requirements of NFPA 77, Recommended Practice on Static Electricity and NFPA 652, Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust.
